John David Schwallier, Chase’s father, informed the New York Times that she was homeless and residing in Los Angeles with her boyfriend shortly before her death.
The former child actress, also known as Daveigh Schwallier, started her career at age four, landing her first Hollywood role at seven, and retired from acting full‑time in 2015, according to her manager.
Her debut television appearance at seven was a minor role on the Melissa Joan Hart‑led sitcom *Sabrina the Teenage Witch*.
Chase’s breakthrough arrived in 2001 with a role as Samantha Darko in *Donnie Darko*, and she later portrayed the titular character’s sister in the 2009 sequel *S. Darko*.
In 2002, she portrayed Samara Morgan, the haunting long‑hair spirit who emerges from a television set in *The Ring*, the American remake of the Japanese horror classic about a cursed videotape.
Her performance earned her a 2003 MTV Movie Award for Best Villain, recognizing the terrifying demonic figure that crawls on hands and feet before killing its victims.
Also in 2002, she voiced Lilo, the Elvis‑obsessed Hawaiian girl, in the animated hit *Lilo & Stitch*.
The role earned her an Annie Award for Outstanding Voice Acting in an Animated Feature and she later reprised the character in various spin‑offs.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Chase faced numerous legal issues later in life, including charges of drug possession and joyriding in a stolen vehicle.
