[DEADLOCK’S CITY NEVER SLEEPS UPDATE IGNITES PLAYER SURGE WITH SIX NEW HEROES AND RECORD BREAK]

Valve has delivered one of the most substantial updates for its multiplayer hero shooter Deadlock, and the changes have instantly sparked a surge in player activity on Steam.

Entitled “City Never Sleeps,” this patch introduces six brand‑new heroes, dramatically revamps the game’s city map, adds novel neutral factions and objectives, and includes extensive improvements to user interface and quality‑of‑life elements.

Deadlock quickly topped its own historic player numbers shortly after the update launched, reaching over 228,000 concurrent users on Steam — surpassing its previous all‑time high of roughly 171,000 simultaneous players achieved back in September 2024.

Six New Heroes Are Coming to Deadlock

Among the most anticipated additions are six distinct heroes: Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba, and Violet.

However, Valve will not introduce all six characters at once. Players can participate in a controlled rollout, voting for which heroes receive priority release as the weeks progress. This integrates directly into the pre‑game experience, allowing the community to shape the order in which characters become available throughout the summer.

A recent image highlighting these additions credits PlayDeadlock as the source for the new roster expansion.

Each character brings a unique design and playstyle to the city. Rat King, in particular, gained early attention thanks to strong roots within the Deadlock community, while other newcomers include a medic wielding a syringe, a floating chessmaster, a skeletal warrior bearing a rocket launcher, a witch‑like figure, and a young aspiring artist.

Because the releases are staggered, the six heroes gradually integrate into the game over time rather than debuting simultaneously, ensuring players can see and experience each character through multiple seasonal phases.

The Update Transforms Deadlock’s City

In addition to character additions, “City Never Sleeps” delivers a comprehensive visual and mechanical overhaul of the Deadlock map.

Although the setting remains the supernatural incarnation of New York City, Valve has completely redrawn key locations, introducing new environments, enhanced lighting, and fresh gameplay mechanics across the expanded zones.

Modern districts such as The Theatre, Chinatown, Haunted Lot, and Plaza offer players renewed exploration opportunities, while existing lanes have received refreshed aesthetics that better complement the overall mood of the city.

The patch also introduces dynamic environmental features and new objectives. For instance, Steam Vents grant temporary invisibility and health regeneration, and a broader set of destructible and interactive objects encourages players to engage more actively with the terrain.

Another significant change involves restructuring the previously named neutral foes into a series of specialized “Haunts.” These newly refined enemies expand the variety of interactions players can encounter beyond the primary combat lanes.

Deadlock Just Set a New Player Record

The “City Never Sleeps” update propelled Deadlock past all prior attendance benchmarks almost as soon as it went live. Within minutes of the patch launch, the title logged more than 228,000 concurrent participants on Steam.

This figure eclipsed Deadlock’s previous all‑time peak of approximately 171,000 simultaneous players, a high attained in September 2024 with the earlier “Old Gods, New Blood” update.

Even comparing against mid‑release peaks — roughly 125,000 concurrent players from an earlier update — the new tally represents a clear upward trajectory for the popular hero shooter.

Valve Continues Development Beyond the Update

Despite the remarkable player spike, Deadlock remains far from being a fully completed, standalone product. Valve has not scheduled any public release date for a closed beta or final build.

The development team continues to refine map layouts, item structures, progression pathways, and hero customization options. Additionally, the studio is prototyping a new wardrobe system for hero cosmetic customisation and testing experimental game modes alongside the base experience.

At present, Valve confirms ongoing iterations and future feature roadmap planning, indicating that the exciting content cycle is still in motion.
