Twelve individuals have perished in a fire at an elderly care home in Sri Lanka, police reported on Thursday, with eight others hospitalized.
The fire, which erupted at a facility in Anguruwatota, located 55 km (34 miles) from Colombo, has been extinguished, and the establishment’s director has been taken into custody, authorities said.
A total of 51 people were rescued from the home and are now being cared for by the military and local officials, police spokesperson Frederick Wootler said.
Two police teams are continuing their investigation, he added.
