Deadly Explosion at South Korean Aerospace Plant Claims Five Lives

SEOUL: A major explosion at a defense industry facility operated by Hanwha Aerospace resulted in five fatalities on Monday, according to local fire department reports.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 am local time (0200 GMT) at the company’s R&D center in Daejeon, located 150 kilometers south of the capital.
Daejin Fire Agency representatives confirmed five deaths and two injuries but withheld additional details.
Hanwha Aerospace, a prominent South Korean defense contractor specializing in weapons systems, artillery, and aerospace technology, operates this research facility focused on advanced military and space applications.
In a press briefing, CEO Son Jae-il indicated the blast likely occurred during standard safety cleaning procedures for rocket propellant manufacturing equipment. He explained: “Residues from explosive materials may remain on tools during this process, and our protocols require thorough removal. This accident appears to have originated from that phase.”
The company pledged to conduct a comprehensive safety review and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
