A massive pile of waste collapsed at the Dar es Salam landfill, the largest in Conakry, early Sunday, killing at least 30 people according to a provisional death toll from Guinea’s civil protection service.
Heavy rains that began around 3 a.m. soaked the refuse, triggering a landslide that engulfed nearby shacks.
Lancine Sylla, the local neighborhood chief, expressed concern that the death toll could be much higher.
Guinea’s minister for territorial administration, Djenabou Touré, visited the site and awaited the completion of search and rescue operations to confirm an official figure.
The government had recently ordered the evacuation of residents and imposed safety measures around the landfill due to fears of further collapses.
The site was slated for closure on Sunday, according to Lieutenant Colonel Balde Mamadou Bailo, sanitation officer of the Military Engineering Battalion.
