Guinea’s civil protection agency reported that a massive pile of waste collapsed at Dar Es Salam, Conakry’s largest landfill, resulting in 30 fatalities.
CONAKRY, Guinea — A large mound of refuse gave way at the capital’s main landfill early Sunday, killing 30 people, according to the central government.
Authorities said that heavy rains beginning around 2 a.m. saturated the waste at Dar Es Salam, the city’s largest landfill, triggering a landslide that buried nearby shacks. Rescue teams are searching for survivors; six people suffered serious injuries, and several homes were destroyed.
The open‑air dump, the city’s largest, had been scheduled for closure on Sunday, according to Lt. Col. Baldé Mamadou Bailo, sanitation officer for the military engineering battalion.
Residents near the landfill had received eviction notices, prompting many to leave, yet some remained present during the disaster, authorities said.
Dienabou Touré, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, said at the scene that the remaining families will be relocated elsewhere.
