Deadly Russian Missile and Drone Strike Claims at Least Four Lives in Kyiv

A large-scale Russian missile and drone assault on Kyiv and its surrounding areas resulted in at least four fatalities and injured more than a dozen people, according to Ukrainian officials on Tuesday.

The attacks occurred just as schoolchildren were preparing to resume classes after the summer break, while officials heightened security amid concerns of additional Russian strikes.

“The Kyiv region experienced a massive attack by Russian missiles and strike drones tonight,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv regional military administration, in a Telegram statement.

AFP correspondents in the capital heard roughly a dozen loud explosions and observed flashes in the sky early Tuesday, shortly after the air force issued a warning about incoming ballistic missiles.

“Tragically, three people were killed in the enemy attack on the capital,” the city’s military administration reported, with indications of five additional injuries.

In Boryspil, east of Kyiv, a strike damaged a business, killing one person and wounding another, Tkachenko reported, adding that eight more individuals were injured when a residential building was hit.

The Ukrainian air force had previously warned that the threat of ballistic weapons and other attack methods against Kyiv and the surrounding region remains ongoing, urging residents to stay in shelters.

Ukrainian children resumed school on Tuesday, and the Kyiv regional military administration has cautioned against holding large gatherings in areas with elevated risk.

Kyiv and its surrounding areas have faced sustained pressure from Russian drone attacks in recent weeks, with jet-powered drones intensifying the threat and prompting up to a dozen air‑raid alerts per day.

A weekend assault on an ammunition depot in the capital’s suburbs resulted in 38 fatalities.

Both parties have intensified long‑range strikes in recent months, targeting infrastructure such as warehouses, businesses, oil and port facilities, and vessels, leading to rising civilian casualties.

Ukraine is grappling with a shortage of interceptor missiles, especially U.S.-made Patriot systems designed to counter ballistic threats.
