A wave of violent confrontations between Israeli settlers and Palestinians swept across the occupied West Bank during the week-long Sukkot holiday, leaving at least one Palestinian dead and several others wounded.
Israeli media reported that the military intervened in clashes in the village of Beita on Saturday amid disputes over the olive harvest. Gunfire was reported in the area, though no casualties were confirmed at the time.
Further disturbances occurred Saturday in the villages of Burin and Asira al-Qibliya, south of Nablus, where Palestinian residents said at least one person was injured after settlers hurled stones.
On Thursday, Reuters reported that Israeli settlers shot two Palestinians in the village of Yasuf, killing one and wounding the other, according to Palestinian officials. The deceased was identified as Mashour Yassin, 51. Village council head Jumaa Abdel Fattah stated that settlers from an outpost established nearby roughly two months ago opened fire during an attack on Yassin’s home on the village outskirts.
“The settlers have been attacking the village continuously since the outpost was established,” Fattah said.
The Israeli military confirmed it was investigating Thursday’s fatal shooting.
Shira Ben Sasson, director of the New Israel Fund, condemned the surge in violence coinciding with the holiday.
“A Palestinian man was shot dead today after settlers entered the village of Yasuf, near the Tapuach Junction,” Ben Sasson stated in a press release.
“Violence is raging across the West Bank, unfolding alongside Sukkot holiday celebrations that have included Jewish settler marches, gatherings, and activities in and around Palestinian communities, often as acts of intimidation. These events are not happening in isolation,” she added.
Ben Sasson expressed solidarity with affected Palestinian communities and affirmed the organization’s support for grassroots groups working “to protect human rights, stand with Palestinian communities, and confront violence and intimidation.”
“We call for the prosecution of the attackers and the killers. The Israeli government knows very well how to track down terrorists when it wants to,” Ben Sasson concluded.
