South African authorities have reported that at least 12 people were killed and nine others wounded during a violent attack at a settlement in Johannesburg on Tuesday night. Investigators are currently working to establish the motive behind the shooting.

Police officials confirmed that the deceased include nine men and three women. Authorities noted that the fatality count may rise as they continue to sweep the area and identify additional crime scenes that may have been previously inaccessible.

Several people, some in police clothing and others in white protective gear, carry a stretcher with a body covered by a sheet. They walk on a path covered with debris.

While officials stated it is too early to definitively confirm the motive, they noted that the location appears to be a processing center for illegal mining. Consequently, police are investigating the possibility that the massacre was linked to illegal mining activities.
