BERLIN — British Secretary of State for Defence John Healey announced his resignation today, citing inadequacies in the government’s defense funding strategy as a key factor. He emphasized that insufficient resources in the delayed Defence Investment Plan (DIP) jeopardize national security.
Healey communicated his decision through a statement on X, acknowledging Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s acknowledgment of homeland threats. However, he criticized the Treasury and defense ministry for failing to allocate adequate funding to address these risks effectively.
“The defense sector requires specific resources to maintain operational readiness,” Healey stated. “A DIP that fails to meet current demands forces compromises that diminish force preparedness and elevate dangers for personnel deployed on missions, potentially undermining national safety.”
This resignation underscores critical concerns about fiscal commitments to defense priorities under the incoming government framework.
