Delhi have handed Aaryavir Sehwag his first major leadership role, naming the 18-year-old as captain of their Under-19 squad for the upcoming Vinoo Mankad Trophy. The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) announced a 16-member squad on Saturday, with the tournament kicking off in Visakhapatnam on October 8.
The appointment arrives at a pivotal moment in Aaryavir’s development. The son of former India opener Virender Sehwag, the young batter recently played for India Under-19 in a three-match Youth ODI series against Australia in Rajkot, gaining crucial international experience.
Aaryavir Sehwag’s Maiden Captaincy Assignment
Aaryavir’s promotion follows a promising outing against Australia, where he scored 109 runs across three matches. He started with 28 off 26 balls in a rain-affected opening win, then struck a composed 47 in the second ODI, before a run-out ended his third innings at 34.
The right-handed batter showed ability to build partnerships, though he fell three runs short of a half-century in the second match. His performances have earned him the chance to lead Delhi at the domestic level.
From Delhi Premier League to India U19 Cricket
Aaryavir’s rapid ascent includes limited-overs exposure with West Delhi Lions in the 2026 Delhi Premier League, where he managed 24 runs in two matches. However, his junior record shines: a stunning 297 for Delhi against Meghalaya in the 2024 Cooch Behar Trophy, showcasing his long-format potential.
His India Under-19 stint also prompted reflection on converting starts into big scores. He acknowledged the need to construct longer innings, discussing how approaching an innings in different phases will be vital as he shoulders greater responsibility with Delhi.
Arnav Bugga Appointed Vice-Captain
Aaryavir will be backed by Arnav Bugga, who has been named vice-captain of the 16-member Delhi squad. The side blends batters, wicketkeepers, and bowlers as they prepare for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy. The squad includes Tanmay Chaudhary, Uday Chawla, Kirit Kaushik, Shantanu Yadav and others.
For Aaryavir, the tournament marks another leap forward. Having recently represented India Under-19, he now bears the added burden of leading Delhi while aiming for significant contributions with the bat. The Vinoo Mankad Trophy starts in Visakhapatnam on October 8, offering the young captain his first real test of combining leadership with personal performance.
