Ousmane Dembele delivered a historic performance, netting one of the fastest hat-tricks in World Cup history to lead France to a convincing 4-1 victory over Norway. With Erling Haaland watching from the bench, the Ballon d’Or winner dominated the match at Boston Stadium on Friday.
Dembele opened the scoring in the seventh minute, added a second in the 20th, and completed his treble in the 32nd minute, shortly after Thelo Aasgaard had managed to pull one back for Norway. Dembele’s feat is one of the quickest in the tournament’s history, surpassed only by Erich Probst, who scored three in 24 minutes for Austria against Czechoslovakia in 1954.
Now with four goals in the competition—following a strike in Monday’s 3-0 win over Iraq—Dembele’s clinical form provides a welcome alternative to captain Kylian Mbappe as France’s primary offensive threat. Desire Doue added a late fourth goal to secure a perfect group stage record for Les Bleus, who advance as Group I winners with nine points and 10 goals scored across three matches.
France will remain in the northeastern United States for their round of 32 clash against a third-place finisher at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium next Tuesday.
The victory was an emotional milestone for the squad, who played without head coach Didier Deschamps, who had returned to France for his mother’s funeral. Deschamps, who is set to retire after 14 years in charge following the conclusion of the tournament, is expected to rejoin the team on Saturday.
Norway progressed to the knockout stages in second place with six points, having already secured qualification via previous wins over Iraq and Senegal. Consequently, coach Stale Solbakken opted for a heavily rotated side, making 10 changes to the starting XI. Key figures including Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard, and Alexander Sorloth were rested, with Fredrik Aursnes being the only starter retained from the previous match. Norway will face Ivory Coast in Dallas next Tuesday.
France also made adjustments, with Maxence Lacroix filling in for the injured William Saliba. While Doue, Theo Hernandez, and Aurelien Tchouameni returned to the lineup, Dembele and Mbappe remained. Mbappe earned his 101st cap, continuing his pursuit of Lionel Messi’s record of 18 World Cup goals.
The opening goal came via a precise assist from Mbappe, who released Dembele on the right; the winger cut inside and fired across goalkeeper Egil Selvik. Dembele, who has flourished since moving into a central role under PSG coach Luis Enrique, continued to cause chaos throughout the match. His second goal was a curling left-footed shot into the far corner, and his third was a similar curling effort from inside the area.
Despite a brief lapse in the French defense that allowed Rangers’ Aasgaard to score a low strike past Mike Maignan, France remained in control. Norway missed a chance to close the gap in the second half when Mike Maignan saved a penalty from Jorgen Strand Larsen. Doue then sealed the result with a header in stoppage time.
By scoring this hat-trick, Dembele joins Just Fontaine (1958) and Kylian Mbappe (2022) as the only French players to achieve the feat at a World Cup.
Senegal Keep Knockout Hopes Alive with 5-0 Rout of Iraq
Senegal improved their goal differential significantly with a dominant 5-0 win over a 10-man Iraq in their Group I finale. Substitute Pape Gueye starred with two spectacular long-range goals in the second half, while Ismaila Sarr scored his third of the tournament.
Habib Diarra opened the scoring in the fourth minute, and Iliman Ndiaye capped the victory with a long-range effort in the 82nd minute. While Senegal finished third in the group, they remain in contention for one of the eight available third-place spots in the round of 32, currently holding the fifth-best record among those teams.
The defeat marks Iraq’s elimination from their first World Cup since 1986.
