Depay Accuses Corinthians of Contract Breach Following Departure

Memphis Depay has accused Corinthians of “unacceptable behaviour” and breaching a prior agreement after the Brazilian club opted against renewing his contract.

The former Manchester United and Barcelona forward joined Corinthians on a two-year deal in 2024 but is now a free agent, claiming the club withdrew a previously agreed-upon extension.

“This renewal was explicitly agreed upon by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial departments. Certain individuals subsequently decided to breach this commitment,” Depay wrote on social media.

“I did not want this situation and have always respected the club throughout the process, but I am now compelled to respond firmly to protect my interests.

“In the coming days I will address this publicly, but rest assured I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unchallenged.”

Depay scored 20 goals in 79 appearances for Corinthians, helping the side secure the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa do Brasil this year.

The São Paulo-based club, currently seventh in Brazil’s Série A, stated the decision not to extend the 32-year-old’s contract was driven by financial considerations.

“It became clear that assuming a new commitment of this magnitude would not be compatible with the financial balance we must preserve to ensure the institution’s sustainability,” read a club statement.

“We recognise this was a difficult decision, but it was undoubtedly necessary for the future of Corinthians.”

Corinthians added that club president Osmar Stabile will hold a press conference in the coming days to address the matter further.

Depay is the Netherlands’ all-time leading goalscorer, though he failed to find the net in three appearances as his national team exited the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32.
