Detroit Tigers center fielder James Outman (43) celebrates a three-run home run against the Houston Astros, accompanied by second baseman Zach McKinstry (39) and left fielder Matt Vierling (8), during the fourth inning at Comerica Park in Detroit on Friday, June 26, 2026.
Outman’s three-run homer helped Keider Montero deliver seven solid innings as the Detroit Tigers shut out the Houston Astros 8-0 on Friday evening.
Kerry Carpenter added a two-run homer — his 11th of the season — while Colt Keith hit a solo shot. Kevin McGonigle reached base three times, stole two bases, and scored twice.
Montero (4-5) allowed just five hits, issued one walk, and struck out three batters. The seven innings matched his longest outing of the season, and Enmanuel De Jesús closed the game with two scoreless innings.
The Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak, while the Astros’ three-game winning streak ended.
Houston starter Spencer Arrighetti surrendered eight runs and five hits over three-plus innings, walking five and striking out seven. Nate Pearson contributed three shutout innings in the second game of the four-game series.
Jose Altuve was the only Houston batter with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 and leaving six runners on base.
Detroit took a 3-0 lead in the third inning after Outman drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on a McGonigle single, and scored when Diaz’s errant throw sailed into center field. Carpenter followed with a 3-1 fastball that cleared the right‑field wall.
The Tigers extended their advantage to 8-0 in the fourth. Keith opened the inning with a cutter over the right‑field wall. After McKinstry walked and Vierling singled, Outman launched an Arrighetti fastball 407 feet for another home run.
After McGonigle walked, Arrighetti was pulled for Pearson. McGonigle stole second and scored on a bloop single by Dillon Dingler.
The Astros had two baserunners in the sixth when Trammell walked and Peña singled, but Montero struck out Yordan Alvarez and retired Isaac Paredes on a foul pop.
The Astros again had two baserunners in the seventh after an Altuve single and a two‑out double by Diaz, but Montero induced a groundout from Cam Smith.
