A significant portion of Arizona Diamondbacks fans appeared hesitant to embrace Ketel Marte upon his return to the lineup following a contentious absence that captured national attention. The infielder faced a mixed reception during his first game back with the team after failing to appear for a contest against the Boston Red Sox earlier this month, an incident that led to his brief placement on the restricted list.
The tension surfaced immediately during Monday evening’s matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies at Chase Field, where boos echoed through the stadium as Marte approached the plate for his initial at-bat. The negative response persisted throughout the game, intensifying when he grounded into a double play in his second trip to the dish.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo acknowledged pregame concerns regarding the fan response toward Marte, expressing some apprehension about how the situation might unfold.
“He’s an emotional kid. He’s a very emotional kid,” Lovullo remarked, emphasizing the personal nature of the circumstances surrounding Marte’s absence.
For his part, Marte addressed the media for the first time since returning, offering insight into his mindset during the controversial episode. He described his failure to report for the Boston game as stemming from a moment of frustration and physical discomfort.
“In that instance, I failed him by not showing up,” Marte said candidly. “That morning I woke up, my body was in pain and I just couldn’t react. No one made the decision for me. I’m the one who made the decision to not show up.”
Prior to the game, Lovullo expressed confidence in Marte’s commitment to the organization and its supporters, despite criticism over his communication—or lack thereof—regarding the absence.
“I know that he loves the fans,” Lovullo stated. “I know that he picks up on their energy. He pays attention to what the fans say and do, and love and support of him. Maybe he didn’t answer the question the way he would have if … he had a chance to really sit down and say what he wanted to say, but I know he loves his fans.”
