Longtime France manager Didier Deschamps is returning to Boston on Saturday to rejoin his team after missing France’s 4-1 victory over Norway to attend his mother’s funeral in France.
France assistant Guy Stephan noted, “We are happy that he comes back. He will be with us tomorrow at training. Our duo will be reunited and we will prepare for the upcoming matches.”
Deschamps will have several days to adjust before France faces a third-place finisher in their round-of-32 match on June 30 in East Rutherford, N.J.
France, the +400 betting favorites to win the World Cup per DraftKings, completed group play with a 3-0-0 record, scoring 10 goals and conceding two.
The 57-year-old coach has led France since 2012. He secured the 2018 World Cup title and suffered a penalty-kick loss to Argentina in the 2022 final. As France’s captain during their 1998 World Cup win, he earned a record 103 international caps before retiring in 2000.
