Washington accuses Paris of condescending tone regarding international human rights positions

American diplomats withdrew from a United Nations Security Council session on Monday as France’s representative began addressing the body.
The sudden withdrawal followed a sharp digital exchange between U.S. and French authorities two days prior, triggered by Washington’s opposition to the reappointment of UN human rights chief Volker Turk.
France’s UN Mission in Geneva stated on Saturday that the United States has ceased to be a “beacon of human rights” and now stands isolated alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali, and Russia.
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz retorted on X, claiming that France had supported a rights chief who “has been lecturing free, sovereign democracies like the United States, the UK, and Israel, while cozying up to the world’s worst oppressors.”
After the walkout, alternate U.S. representative Dan Negrea informed the council that his delegation would continue to exit until France abandons its “condescending and disrespectful rhetoric.”
French ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont did not mention the walkout during his remarks, instead emphasizing that France remains committed to preserving the U.N.’s independence and its capacity to act.
Turk, who has criticized violations of international law by Israel and the United States in Palestine and Iran, was reappointed by a U.N. General Assembly vote of 144 in favor, 10 against, and 13 abstentions.
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has reduced funding for U.N. agencies and withdrawn from numerous U.N. entities since 2025. It also threatened to reassess its engagement over Turk’s mandate.
Washington and Paris have additionally clashed over NATO spending levels, trade policies, and Trump’s threats to occupy Greenland, a territory belonging to NATO member Denmark.
France, alongside other European nations, has further drawn Trump’s ire for refusing direct participation in the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
