The US dollar is retreating for the fourth consecutive day, even as Brent crude hovers around the $110‑per‑barrel mark. The last time Brent reached these levels was in May, when disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz precipitated a brief peace deal between Washington and Tehran. Currently, Middle‑East exports sit at roughly 80 % of pre‑war volumes, according to the US Department of Energy, yet a geopolitical risk premium is keeping oil prices elevated.
Security incidents in the Strait of Hormuz have intensified the region’s tension. Kpler reports that 18 vessels have been attacked there over the past two weeks, while Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia add further pressure. Iran, feeling cornered, is tightening its grip on this critical oil passage.
The decline in Brent is being offset by rising tanker traffic to China and a notable contraction in global inventories. At the outset of the Middle‑East conflict, these stocks cushioned the North Sea crude rally. The International Energy Agency has now released the final 100 million barrels from its strategic reserve, completing a 400‑million‑barrel allocation agreed upon in March. Beijing’s growing demand for crude is reinforcing bullish sentiment.
The divergence between Brent and the US dollar reflects a shift in market drivers. Historically, the greenback strengthened alongside rising oil prices, benefiting from its safe‑haven status and the United States’ role as an energy exporter. Today, the USD index is more responsive to equity‑market dynamics, particularly to movements in US Treasury yields. The Nasdaq‑100’s worst weekly performance since April 2025 sparked a drop in Treasury yields as investors sought safety. With the Federal Reserve’s October tightening prospects waning, the dollar has lost a key support factor. However, a recovery in technology shares has slowed the USD’s decline, prompting forex traders to focus increasingly on corporate earnings rather than geopolitical headlines.
