ABUJA, Nigeria — A group of students abducted in May by militants in Oyo State’s southwestern region have been rescued, the government announced Friday.
Government spokesperson Bayo Onanuga did not disclose the exact number of students released, but officials indicated that more than 40 individuals had been kidnapped during the May 15 raids on two secondary schools.
Eight suspected militants were apprehended as part of the rescue operation, Onanuga added.
The kidnappings in Oyo State marked an escalation of Nigeria’s security crisis, as such abductions had predominantly occurred in the northern region in the past.
