Two individuals lost their lives when Russian drones targeted a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Starokozache crossing, located approximately 500km (310 miles) south of Kyiv, was shut down following the overnight assault. Photographs from the site revealed several vehicles left entirely charred, with debris and wreckage scattered across the border checkpoint.
In a separate incident, four individuals, including a child, were killed in the southern Russian city of Novorossiysk during a Ukrainian drone strike, the regional governor reported.
Both Moscow and Kyiv have intensified long-range strikes over the past several months, even as diplomatic initiatives to conclude the conflict continue.
Following the attack on the Starokozache crossing, Zelensky reiterated his demand for international assistance, stating that “the aggression must be halted here and now before it expands further.”
The border connection between Ukraine and Moldova was closed after the attack resulted in two fatalities and three injuries, Odesa regional governor Oleg Kiper confirmed.
A Moldovan driver sustained injuries as well, the country’s foreign ministry reported.
Moldova has become increasingly entangled in the conflict, with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan confirming that 17 drones struck Moldovan territory in August alone—more than the entire previous year.
“Those who disregard or minimize these threats—and decline to identify the aggressor—are denying reality,” he wrote on social media.
“Russia initiated this war. Russia alone bears full responsibility.”
