Jean-Paul Doron, an amateur fisherman and retired heritage architect, navigates an almost empty creek in Normandy, his red suede shoes crunching on pallid rocks. This stretch of the Sennevière River once teemed with trout, bullhead, and otters—now it lies parched.
“These minnows are the last survivors,” Doron remarks, gesturing to minnows circling in murky water. “Soon, they’ll have nothing left to eat.”
For over three decades, Doron has championed France’s waterway protection, lobbying parliamentarians in Paris and leading a “Save Our Rivers” campaign through the National French Fishing Federation. His efforts grow urgent as rivers shrink to historic lows.
Scientists warn of a systemic crisis. Luis Samaniego, a hydrology professor at the University of Potsdam, notes that consecutive droughts outpace recovery periods: “It’s like ending up in bankruptcy.” The World Meteorological Organization links intensifying droughts to rising global temperatures, emphasizing that single storms cannot reverse long-term deficits.
Across Europe, water scarcity disrupts economies and ecosystems. In Germany, Rhine shipments carry 80% less cargo, while Danube levels threaten power generation in Hungary and Romania. Italian rice farmers face irrigation shortages, and households from the UK to southern Europe confront restrictions.
Financial risks loomed large for the European Central Bank, which estimates extreme droughts could jeopardize up to 24% of Eurozone output. Drought monitoring systems are expanding, combining rainfall, soil, and river data to enable proactive measures.
For Doron, preserving small streams is as vital as protecting major rivers. “Protecting what’s at the source prevents downstream collapse,” he insists.
Community ties to waterways run deep. André Lucilius, a retired resident of Mortrée, built a bench along the Sennevière River where his family once fished. Now, the creek is a dry trench. “This feels surreal,” he says. “How do we lose something so fundamental?”
