Du Plooy to leave Middlesex for South Africa chance

Middlesex captain Leus du Plooy is set to depart the club at the end of the season, choosing instead to recommit internationally for South Africa.

His contract, originally slated to expire in 2027, depended on him qualifying as a domestic player, and he had previously indicated interest in representing England,, external.

Pursuing a South African One Day International slot renders him eligible as an overseas player, consequently nullifying his Middlesex agreement.

“An opportunity has arisen for me to explore the possibility of representing South Africa, and I feel that I owe it to myself to see where that opportunity might lead,” Du Plooy stated to Middlesex’s website, external.

The 31‑year‑old signed with Middlesex in 2024, after spending three prior seasons with Derbyshire.

As a left‑handed batsman, he has compiled 2,795 First‑Class runs for Middlesex, averaging 51.75 across seven centuries, including an unbeaten 263 against Gloucestershire at Lord’s in 2025.

He assumed the captainship of Middlesex in June 2025.
