Duncan Sheik, the singer who earned a Grammy nomination for his 1996 debut single, “Barely Breathing,” is receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition.
The artist shared an update about his health on social media on Wednesday. “We would like to share an update with Duncan’s fans and the public. Duncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition,” the statement read. “Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time. We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate.”
The statement thanked fans for their continued love and support.
The reason for Sheik’s medical treatment has not been disclosed. A representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The New Jersey native released his self-titled debut album in 1996. It included “Barely Breathing,” which was certified gold and peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for 55 consecutive weeks. Sheik received a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for the song.
Sheik has also written scores for films and composed music for stage productions. His credits include the score for the 2004 drama A Home at the End of the World; the music and orchestration for the critically acclaimed 2006 Broadway musical Spring Awakening; and the musical numbers for the 2019 Off-Broadway production Alice by Heart, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Producer Jesse Singer also asked Sheik to help adapt Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho into a musical. Featuring Sheik’s EDM-influenced songs, the production premiered at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2013.
“There’s a version of American Psycho that you could do that is campy, kitschy and incredibly broad and comic. I wasn’t interested in that,” Sheik told Rolling Stone in 2016, when the musical reached Broadway. “I wanted it to be a little deeper and more ambiguous weird and strange and, hopefully, beautiful.”
