Durham leg-spin bowler Shafiqullah Ghafari has signed a one-year contract extension, securing his future at the club through the 2027 season.

The 24-year-old played a crucial role in the 2026 One-Day Cup, making 10 appearances to help Durham reach the semi-finals.

He recorded career-best figures of 4-36 against Lancashire at Old Trafford in August, ultimately ending the season as the club’s leading wicket-taker in the competition with 16 dismissals.

Ghafari, who was born in Afghanistan and successfully claimed asylum in England, featured only once in Durham’s County Championship Division Two promotion success, in the final game against Lancashire.

However, he also enjoyed a highly successful campaign at the club level, taking 65 wickets in 23 games for Richmondshire in the North Yorkshire and South Durham Premier League in 2026.

“I have enjoyed being part of this team over the last couple of years and contributing when I can,” Ghafari told the Durham club website., external

“It was great to play a part in the One-Day Cup and hopefully I can continue to take wickets for Durham across all formats into next season.”
