In the Dutch town of Dodewaard on the River Waal, angler Mohammed Massaoudi has set a new national record after catching a massive 2.49-metre catfish. The meticulous angler employed modern technology, including an echo sounder, to locate the prize fish before successfully landing it over the weekend.
The record-breaking catch carries added significance as it eclipses the previous record of 2.47 metres held by Massaoudi’s friend and fishing partner, Paul Breems. Interestingly, Paul had been actively attempting to surpass his own record when Massaoudi’s catch occurred. Following the successful retrieval, Paul assisted his friend in bringing the enormous catfish ashore. Over the years, Paul had progressively improved his personal best from 2.42 metres to his previous 2.47-metre record.
According to reports from De Gelderlander, Mohammed will now be officially recognized as the Dutch catfish record holder. Paul reportedly took the development in good stride, offering his congratulations to his friend.
Notably, the tremendous fish was released back into the River Waal, ensuring its continued presence in the wild where it may yet grow further. This means Paul still has the opportunity to reclaim the record in future attempts.
