A Dutch court on Friday imposed a life sentence on a 66‑year‑old man for his involvement in the massacre of 3,000 Tutsis during the 1994 Rwanda genocide.
During the April 1994 violence, terrified victims fled to a football stadium in Mbazi, southern Rwanda, where they were later systematically killed.
The presiding judge identified the defendant as Eugene N., finding that he blocked Tutsis from leaving the stadium and threw a grenade into the crowd.
The court also established that he took part in earlier attacks, during which homes were looted and set ablaze.
“Only a lifelong prison sentence does justice to the immense suffering that has been inflicted on the victims and the bereaved families,” the court said.
The judge concluded that his actions were carried out with “genocidal intent.”
