Addis Ababa — The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) emphasizes that multilingualism is crucial for bolstering Africa’s international cooperation, as language underpins diplomacy, trade, education, science, culture and development.
ECA Deputy Executive Secretary Mama Keita delivered these remarks at today’s International Translation Day event, which is observed each year on September 30 under this year’s theme, “Language Diversity and Language Rights: The Power to be Understood.”
She explained that multilingualism empowers individuals and communities to bridge linguistic and cultural divides, fostering deeper international cooperation and mutual understanding.
Keita highlighted that access to information in languages people understand is vital for meaningful participation in society, stressing how language enables citizens to obtain knowledge, public services and opportunities.
International Translation Day is celebrated each year to acknowledge the vital role of translators and interpreters in facilitating communication, international cooperation, cultural exchange, knowledge sharing, peace and mutual understanding.
