An Egyptian court has handed down death sentences to twelve individuals, including a prominent television presenter, on drug trafficking charges. The ruling marks a severe escalation in the country’s ongoing crackdown on narcotics offenses.
The verdict was delivered during a session that also saw a South African high court dismiss an attempt by a former defence minister to have a corruption case against her thrown out. In a separate cultural milestone, the inaugural Pan-African Architecture Biennale opened its doors in Nairobi on Monday, showcasing contemporary design from across the continent.
