Egypt’s El-Sisi Condemns Any Plan to Displace Palestinians from Gaza

Israel’s defence minister has pledged to remove Palestinians from the besieged Strip.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has dismissed any proposals for the displacement of Palestinians, hours after Israel’s defence minister stated the military would “finish the job” in Gaza.

During a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday, el-Sisi reaffirmed “Egypt’s unwavering position opposing the displacement of the Palestinian people or any effort to undermine the Palestinian cause,” according to the Wafa news agency.

Abbas commended Egypt’s steadfast support for Palestinian rights and restated that “Gaza remains an inseparable part of our state.”

The Egyptian president’s remarks came just hours after Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz declared that the military would “finish the job” in Gaza “so that we can also implement the migration plan.”

Earlier this month, Katz said Israel was prepared to relocate Palestinians from Gaza by sea and land, but was awaiting direction from the United States, which he said was discussing potential destinations for the territory’s two million residents.

US Ambassador Mike Huckabee has denied any plan to “displace people out of Gaza against their will.” In February, Huckabee stated he “would be fine” if Israel took most of the Middle East in line with his biblical interpretation, though he later suggested his remarks had been selectively edited.

Nearly the entire population of Gaza has been internally displaced, and vast stretches of the territory lie in ruin after more than three years of war that has killed over 73,700 Palestinians.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier this month that the military would not withdraw from the Gaza Strip, despite a US-backed ceasefire agreement that took effect in October and included withdrawal as a condition.

Netanyahu asserted that Israel controls 60 percent of the Palestinian enclave and vowed not to pull back until Hezbollah is disarmed.

His government has continued to push for expanded Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including through a controversial project known as E1, which envisions the construction of thousands of housing units between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement.

Israeli human rights group B’Tselem warned this week that Israel is executing a systematic and accelerating campaign to dismantle “Palestinian collective life” and establish permanent Jewish-Israeli sovereignty across the occupied West Bank.
