A total of 80 residents from two apartment blocks in Valencia were evacuated as a precaution on Thursday after a fire broke out on two ground floors, resulting in heavy smoke accumulation. Municipal sources have confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident.
The blaze, located in Valencia’s Benicalap neighborhood, prompted a large-scale response from multiple fire service crews. While the fire is currently under control, emergency personnel remain on the scene managing the situation.
The fire was contained to the ground floor, which was occupied by squatters and was scheduled for a court-ordered eviction on Thursday, according to police reports. Investigators are currently examining whether the fire was intentionally set, though all possibilities remain under investigation.
Valencia Mayor María José Catalá visited Picayo Street, noting that the significant smoke concentration might prevent some residents from returning to their homes overnight. In response, the city council has activated the Social Emergency Care and Emergency Support Service (SAUS) to provide assistance and assess the needs of those displaced.
The mayor reported that firefighters are continuing to manage extinguishing operations and assisting with the rescue of pets. She confirmed that no injuries occurred and that displaced residents have been directed to a municipal center. The cause of the fire remains undetermined as investigations continue.
Local residents have previously raised concerns regarding the occupancy of the ground-floor units, citing issues with threats, sanitation, and unsanitary living conditions.
