Elderly Man Dies After Sunlounger Dispute Sparks Fatal Brawl on Athens Riviera

Greek police are investigating the death of an 82-year-old man following a violent altercation over a sunlounger at a beach on the Athenian Riviera.

The incident occurred Sunday morning at the popular Vouliagmeni bathing spot. The victim arrived before 10 a.m. to secure a sunbed but clashed with a 76-year-old stranger after finding loungers in short supply.

The argument escalated into a physical scuffle, reportedly drawing in bystanders. The victim, who was accompanied by his wife, suffered a cardiac arrest during the melee.

State broadcaster ERT reported that individuals accompanying the 76-year-old also joined the fray. The 82-year-old sustained serious injuries and was rushed by ambulance to Asklepieion Hospital in Voula.

Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead around 11 a.m., prompting an immediate autopsy order.

Police detained the 76-year-old and a 21-year-old woman who was with him, along with the beach resort’s manager for questioning.

A police source described the fight as unprecedented, noting that Greek disputes typically remain verbal rather than turning into fistfights, especially among the elderly, which has amplified public shock.

The tragedy unfolds against a backdrop of a severe cost-of-living crisis gripping Greece, which has heightened social tensions and contributed to a rise in domestic violence and interpersonal disputes.

Public anger has also mounted in recent years over private concessionaires monopolizing prime coastal stretches with exorbitantly priced sunloungers, touching a nerve in a nation where the sea is central to cultural identity.

Authorities confirmed all involved parties are expected to appear before a magistrate.
