A stabbing rampage carried out by a repeat violent offender wearing an electronic ankle monitor has cast doubt on whether South Korea’s supervision system can adequately manage high-risk individuals and prevent attacks before they occur.
The 59-year-old suspect told investigators he acted out of frustration over perceived mistreatment at a hospital, police revealed on Wednesday.
Three criminal profilers are assisting investigators in determining the motive behind Tuesday’s attack at a shopping centre in Incheon, which left ten people injured. A woman in her twenties remained in a coma as of Wednesday.
“I did not target any specific person, and I chose people who looked weaker than me, but I had no intention to kill,” the suspect stated during questioning at Namdong Police Station in Incheon.
