Elijah Zion Bieniemy has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy, wife of Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Mia Bieniemy, 57, was shot at the couple’s home in Ashburn, Virginia, on Sunday night. Police responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 7:32 p.m. and found an adult female with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the report.
The couple’s 27‑year‑old son faces charges of malicious wounding, firearm use in the commission of a felony, and unlawful discharge of a firearm within a dwelling.
He was taken to the Loudoun County adult detention facility and is being held without bond.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains ongoing.
ESPN Chiefs reporter Nate Taylor reported that Mia is in stable condition.
During the incident, Eric was away with the Chiefs at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri.
He has since departed the Chiefs and did not attend Monday’s training camp practice to be with his wife.
In a statement to ESPN, the Chiefs said they are aware of an incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family.
Earlier this year, the Chiefs rehired Bieniemy after a three‑year absence from the organization.
Following a Super Bowl victory in 2022, Bieniemy served one season as offensive coordinator for the Commanders, then briefly coached at UCLA in 2024 and last year worked as running backs coach for the Bears.
After a season without playoff appearances last year, the Chiefs dismissed offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and subsequently pursued Bieniemy.
