Emerging Concerns Loom Over Indian Final Exams After Widespread Student Complaints
National demonstrators in India are expressing deep dissatisfaction following a massive wave of requests for their graded examination materials. Over 400,000 students have reached out, seeking copies of their recent Grade 12 exam sheets and answer keys amid significant criticism of a new digital marking system. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) reports receiving over 1.1 million requests for verification, a figure that underscores the scale of the student movement.
Students have been vocal about discrepancies in marking, with many alleging that the newly implemented online system has led to inaccuracies. Reports indicate complaints about incomplete scans, blurred images, and mismatched physical copies. In particularly distressing cases, students have claimed they lost at least 30 marks despite their answers matching official results exactly.
An concerned mother, Geetu Moza, highlighted the emotional toll, describing her daughter’s disappointment over losing marks that should have been awarded. The issue has escalated into a nationwide debate about the reliability and fairness of India’s digital assessment tools before critical university admissions.
In response, CBSE officials stated that the new on-screen marking (OSM) system was introduced to reduce human error and enhance efficiency. However, critics argue that it has inadvertently caused confusion and added another layer of complexity to a system already under scrutiny.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recognized the challenges posed by the recent developments, acknowledging some discrepancies and promising a resolution to restore confidence in the evaluation process.
