• Qatar maintains that essential services and development projects remain secure despite recent fiscal adjustments
  • The Emir emphasizes that the security and sovereignty of the Gulf Cooperation Council states are paramount

DUBAI: During a speech in Doha on Tuesday, Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim Al Thani, emphasized that the security of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and the protection of their sovereignty are absolute priorities that cannot be compromised.

“The security of the GCC states and the preservation of their sovereignty is a matter that cannot be compromised on,” the Emir stated.

Sheikh Tamim also addressed the economic repercussions stemming from the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which has precipitated a global energy crisis. He noted that Qatar has successfully mitigated much of the regional instability due to strategic policies implemented prior to the outbreak of the war.

However, the Emir acknowledged that the conflict has impacted national exports and led to a significant reduction in government revenue, which saw a 42% decline during the first half of the year. He specifically cited the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and damage to the Ras Laffan energy complex as primary drivers of these export disruptions.

Despite these economic challenges, he assured that recent spending reductions have not impacted essential public services or the nation’s primary development goals.

As Qatar provides approximately 20% of the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, any disruption to its production facilities or maritime shipping routes has profound implications for international energy markets. These statements follow the ongoing conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran, which has significantly impacted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and damaged vital energy infrastructure throughout the region.
