Macron’s Syria Dialogue: Assessing Stability
French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Damascus on Monday evening for the first visit by a Western European head of state since Syria’s new authorities took power in December 2024. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani welcomed the French leader at the airport. Macron emphasized France’s focus on unity and statecraft during his arrival.
President Ahmed al-Sharaa expressed ongoing efforts to stabilize Syria post-Assad transition. Central themes include post-conflict reconciliation, international alliances, and addressing immediate challenges.
Discussions also centered on the role of regional powers and potential outcomes for regional security. Diplomats underscored the complexity of balancing peace initiatives with existing geopolitical dynamics.
