Brendon McCullum has been dismissed as head coach of England’s Test side following a series of disappointing results in red‑ball cricket. His departure follows Ben Stokes’s retirement from international cricket, which occurred after England’s 4‑1 Ashes loss in Australia and a 2‑1 defeat to New Zealand at home.
McCullum’s exit marks the end of the ‘Bazball’ era. The ECB announced that he will step down as England’s Test head coach while remaining in charge of the nation’s white‑ball squads.
McCullum responded, “I have truly enjoyed coaching the Test team and am proud of what we have accomplished together. While there have been exhilarating highs and challenging moments, that is inherent in confronting such a demanding role.”
He added that it has been a privilege and an honour to serve, and expressed gratitude to the players, staff, and supporters for their unwavering backing throughout the journey.
Brendon McCullum’s Report Card
McCullum’s time as England’s Test coach was characterised by bold strategies, memorable triumphs, and an aggressive style of play that became known as ‘Bazball.’ Since his appointment in 2022, he reshaped England’s approach to Test cricket, securing decisive home series victories over New Zealand (3‑0) and South Africa (2‑1), and leading a historic 3‑0 series win in Pakistan.
Nevertheless, the attacking approach failed to produce consistent results in the World Test Championship; England placed fourth in the 2021‑23 cycle, dropped to fifth in 2023‑25, and currently rank seventh in the 2025‑27 table.
His tenure also attracted off‑field controversy, including an altercation involving white‑ball captain Harry Brook at a Wellington nightclub in 2025 and criticism of the Ashes squad’s mid‑series trip to Noosa. Additionally, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson missed the second Test against New Zealand after curfew breaches, and Stokes announced his retirement amid speculation of a dispute with McCullum and managing director Rob Key.
Although he is leaving the Test role, McCullum will remain in charge of England’s white‑ball teams.
