If Thomas Tuchel opts for that defensive setup, John Stones and Ezri Konsa look likely to begin the World Cup as England’s first-choice centre-back pairing.
That would surprise many, given Marc Guehi had been widely viewed as the leading candidate for one of the central defensive roles.
Guehi had become central to England’s plans during Euro 2024, and his importance at international level was expected to grow further under Tuchel.
However, there is a growing sense that Tuchel may favour more physicality in the heart of defence, with Stones and Konsa offering a different profile to Guehi.
Before the match against Croatia, Tuchel will also need to consider balance. Guehi usually operates as the left-sided centre-back, while Stones and Konsa are both right-footed, which could influence the manager’s selection.
On the right side of England’s attack, Noni Madueke started ahead of Bukayo Saka on Wednesday.
A fully fit Saka would almost certainly begin ahead of his Arsenal team-mate, but Tuchel has acknowledged that the winger’s fitness needs to be managed after a lower-leg muscle issue limited his involvement during Arsenal’s end-of-season run.
There was genuine concern at the Emirates Stadium late last season that Saka could miss the closing weeks of the campaign, and Arsenal remain concerned about his condition now that he is with the England squad in the United States.
There is hope, however, that Saka’s fitness is improving day by day.
If England were playing a knockout match now, there is every chance Saka could start, although he may not be able to complete the full 90 minutes.
With the group stage still ahead, the level of protection Tuchel provides Saka could be a major factor in the team he selects.
If the England manager decides to ease Saka into the tournament, Madueke offers a trusted and highly rated alternative on the right flank.
