Scorecard
England’s decisive Test against New Zealand — and possibly the future of the hosts’ management — hangs in the balance following a dramatic and fluctuating third day at Trent Bridge.
As the once‑flat pitch started to deteriorate and produce unpredictable bounce, England first lost momentum with the bat, then endeavored with the ball to stay competitive.
By the close, New Zealand stood at 120 for 3, a 204‑run lead that appeared substantial given the uneven surface revealed on Saturday.
The Black Caps had slipped to 12 for 2 and later 51 for 3, but Rachin Ravindra’s unbeaten 60 and Daryl Mitchell’s 26 not out kept the visitors firmly in control.
England started the day aiming to approach New Zealand’s first‑innings total of 438, yet they lost three key wickets for just 10 runs within the opening six overs.
Joe Root was dismissed for 21, and Jacob Bethell added 74 without increasing his overnight total; Jamie Smith contributed only a single run.
Harry Brook played a composed innings of 58, but England collapsed, losing their final three wickets for four runs and finishing all out for 354, trailing by 84 runs on first innings.
New Zealand seamer Zak Foulkes, who entered the match on Friday as a concussion substitute for Blair Tickner, claimed three wickets on Saturday, dismissing Brook and England captain Ben Stokes.
