Since Joe Root resumed as Test captain, England have not selected a frontline spinner, opting for a four‑man pace attack of Jofra Archer, Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson.
South Africa’s victory in the third Test at Cape Town suggests England will soon need an alternative.
Off‑spinner Simon Harmer, who once considered playing for England before choosing his birth nation, took 10 for 120 to bowl the Proteas to triumph. Newlands is not a typical spinner’s venue, but it turned big from day three; the overall turn average of 4.35 degrees was the fourth‑highest recorded at Cape Town.
Harmer was aided by left‑arm pace bowlers Mitchell Starc and Marco Jansen, who created footholes outside right‑handers’ off stumps. Starc will be unavailable against England, but Jansen will be a factor.
England’s spin difficulties are long‑standing, leaving no simple solution.
Potential options include Shoaib Bashir, a return to Jack Leach or Mason Crane, or a debut for Nottinghamshire’s Liam Patterson‑White – the recent recipient of an England development contract – all facing stiff competition.
Since Harmer’s return to Test cricket in 2022, no spinner has posted a better average anywhere in the world.
