England Lions batter Ben McKinney has secured his future at Durham, signing a two-year contract extension that keeps him with the club through the end of the 2028 season.
A Sunderland native, McKinney has established himself as a mainstay at the top of the order since making his professional debut in April 2023.
His rise has been rapid, marked by five first-class centuries—including a career-high 244 against Gloucestershire—and a consistent presence within the England Lions setup.
“I love playing for my home county and representing the badge as a local lad,” McKinney told the club’s official website. “We are playing some great cricket this year, and I want to play a part in helping us get back into Division One, along with making an impact in the white-ball game.”
The 21-year-old’s versatility is evident; he has already recorded a List-A century and is set to represent Southern Brave in The Hundred this season, following six appearances for the Manchester Originals last year.
Expectations are high at Chester-le-Street that McKinney is on a trajectory to become the next North East cricketer to earn a full England cap.
“Ben has developed a huge amount since breaking into the first team, becoming a key part of our red-ball squad while continuing his progression in the white-ball game,” noted head coach Ryan Campbell. “He possesses all the attributes to be an outstanding top-order batter in all formats for Durham over a long period, which is very exciting for us.”
