England will face a Western Australia XI in a 50-over warm-up match at the WACA Ground in Perth on November 7, as they prepare for their upcoming eight-match white-ball tour of Australia scheduled for November and December.
The game is part of England’s build-up to the three-match ODI series beginning on November 13 at Perth Stadium, with subsequent fixtures in Adelaide (November 15) and Hobart (November 18). While England is expected to field a near full-strength ODI squad, several Test players may be rested during the five-match T20I leg running from November 21 to December 2, as they gear up for a Test tour of South Africa.
Australia faces a comparable workload management challenge, with key Test bowlers needing careful handling after their recent three-Test tour of South Africa, which concludes on October 31. This comes ahead of Australia’s four-Test series against New Zealand starting December 9.
Last year, England drew criticism for not organizing a full-scale warm-up match before the Ashes, instead opting for an intra-squad game on a slow track at Lilac Hill, which preceded a disappointing opening Test loss at Perth Stadium within two days.
This time, England’s ODI setup, led by white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum, has taken a more structured approach to preparation.
“Aside from Jos, Joe and Adil Rashid, there’s not a lot of experience in that side,” McCullum noted last month. “You’ve got to try to navigate what you can and try to include what you can alongside the opposition you’re facing and ensure they maintain high quality.”
The strength of the Western Australia XI remains uncertain following a lackluster start to their domestic one-day campaign. The fixture sits between two away Sheffield Shield matches in Adelaide and Melbourne, creating an 11-day window for player availability.
It is unlikely that WA’s Test and limited-overs representatives Cameron Green, Josh Inglis and Cooper Connolly would be released just six days after their participation in the third Test against India concludes.
Pacers Lance Morris, Jhye Richardson and Mahli Beardman are potential candidates for selection, subject to fitness considerations. Workload management for Richardson and Morris in red-ball cricket will play a significant role in their availability decisions.
