England defender Jarell Quansah has received a two-match suspension following a red card in the 3-2 victory over Mexico.
The incident occurred in the 54th minute, marking the first red card for Quansah in international competitions.
FIFA classified the challenge on Jesus Gallardo as serious foul play, resulting in an additional match combined with Fifa’s standard one-game suspension.
Quansah, aged 23, will not feature in England’s quarter-final against Norway (22:00 BST) and potential semi-final against either Argentina or Switzerland.
While the Football Association (FA) considered challenging the decision, tournament rules prevent appeals, though BBC Sport reported strong arguments regarding the refereeing process involving still images and slow-motion playback.
Premier League protocols typically show incidents in real-time first, contrasting with the extreme measures taken in this tournament.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel faces defensive planning challenges, as Quansah had filled in for injured player Reece James during the Mexico match.
Assistance coach Anthony Barry expressed disappointment, stating, “It’s disappointing, not the decision itself, but losing a valuable player.”
Tuchel emphasized the team’s need to adapt, noting injuries had created opportunities for Quansah’s inclusion.
Quansah’s manager added, “He trained well, and while we have position-specific injuries, his absence is a hurdle we must overcome.”
Winger Bukayo Saka echoed the frustration, calling the ban “incredibly frustrating for both the player and the squad.”
Fifa has assigned French referee Clement Turpin to officiate the Norway match, having previously oversaw England’s 4-2 win against Croatia.
