Enzo Maresca dismissed the rumors linking Rodri with a transfer to Real Madrid during his introduction as Manchester City’s new head coach, stating he is unfazed by the speculation surrounding one of his squad’s key players.
Maresca said: “We have to acknowledge that speculation surrounds every big player, so I’m not concerned. It’s normal, especially after Spain’s World Cup triumph. Rodri is among the best; every coach would want him. However, following his surgery on Monday, he requires rest and recovery, and will return to us soon.”
The midfielder has been at the center of transfer rumors after helping his national team win the World Cup, but Maresca views such attention as an inevitable outcome of having one of the best players in the world.
Replacing Guardiola
Maresca also confronts the daunting task of succeeding Pep Guardiola, whose lengthy and triumphant tenure at Manchester City has concluded. While he acknowledges the magnitude of the challenge, he views the opportunity to follow Guardiola as a privilege, not a cause for apprehension.

The new manager pointed to the difficulties that can arise when a manager spends many years at the same club, using Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger as examples of managers whose successors faced a difficult transition. Maresca wants to ensure that Manchester City can move into its new era smoothly.
Maresca said: “First, I want to say it’s a privilege. The club’s decision to appoint me means I feel honored. I regard Pep as the best coach of the past 20‑25 years. It’s a challenge, it’s rewarding, and a privilege. Moreover, the trend shows spells of difficulty when managers follow long‑serving predecessors like Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger. Nevertheless, I am determined to act promptly in the best interests of the club, its fans, and everyone involved.”
Manchester City in the transfer market
The manager also commented on Manchester City’s transfer‑window strategy, indicating that the club remains open to squad adjustments. He did not rule out additional signings, noting that the team will continue to evaluate its needs as the market evolves.
Maresca said: “I believe there is always work to be done, driven by both our ambitions and the ever‑changing nature of the transfer window. A few adjustments are likely, and we are currently addressing them.”
