Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh indicated that the central bank remains committed to combating inflation, a hawkish posture that drove up bond yields and injected volatility into equity markets.
Following Warsh’s remarks at the Kansas City Fed’s annual conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the Dow initially climbed before giving back its gains during midday trading. Short-term Treasury yields surged as the market interpreted his comments as an indication that interest rates might still increase. The 2-year yield rose to 4.33% from approximately 4.23% prior to the speech, leaving the Dow essentially flat.
Market participants had anticipated that Warsh, who is notably less communicative than his predecessors, would provide insights into the economic outlook and reassure investors that the central bank stands prepared to hike rates if necessary.
The Nasdaq Composite and semiconductor stocks declined after Marvell Technology’s earnings fell short of investor expectations. Although the chipmaker raised its guidance and posted stronger revenue and profit figures, its shares plummeted 10%, underscoring the lofty expectations investors hold for AI-related companies.
Crude oil prices are pulling back, with Brent futures hovering near $88 per barrel.
