Errol Spence Jr Announces Retirement Following Comeback Defeat in Sydney

Former welterweight world champion Errol Spence Jr has announced his retirement from boxing after suffering a decisive defeat to Tim Tszyu in Sydney.

American contender Spence Jr, 36, previously held the WBA, WBC, and IBF belts and retired undefeated through 28 bouts before his loss to Terence Crawford three years ago.

In his return to the ring, Spence found himself consistently on the defensive against Australian Tszyu, ultimately losing by scores of 118-110, 117-111, and 117-111 on the judges’ scorecards.

“I think yeah, for sure,” Spence stated when asked whether his boxing career has reached its conclusion.

“I have my faculties intact. My money is working well for itself. Everything is good, man.”

“I have a beautiful family, and I thank God for the grace to leave this sport with my mind intact and my family still by my side.”

Tszyu grew in confidence and power as the fight progressed, relentlessly targeting Spence’s chin. With the victory secured, the Australian now seeks an opportunity to fight for a world title of his own.

“I had sleepless nights thinking about facing a legend, but it was one hell of a show, and I understand why he is considered one of the greats,” Tszyu remarked.

“I would love to fight for a title. That is my ultimate goal. However, I must say that defeating a great like Errol Spence feels even better than a world title.”

Spence claimed his first world title in 2017 when he defeated British fighter Kell Brook at Bramall Lane.
