Escalating Strikes Claim Five Lives Across Russia and Ukraine Following Shopping Mall Drone Attack

KYIV, Ukraine — Officials reported Saturday that Russian drone and missile strikes killed at least three people in Ukraine, while a Ukrainian drone strike on Russia’s Krasnodar region left two dead, coming a day after a Ukrainian shopping mall attack that claimed 16 lives.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that overnight ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv’s railway infrastructure resulted in one fatality and one injury.

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that its forces struck a locomotive depot.

Local officials said a Russian ballistic missile strike on the Kyiv region Saturday afternoon killed one person.

Moscow has intensified its ballistic missile barrage on Kyiv, taking advantage of Ukraine’s chronic shortage of U.S.-made Patriot interceptors — the only system capable of downing such missiles.

Local officials reported that Russian drone fire killed one person overnight in a Zaporizhzhia‑region village, while Zelenskyy said three people were injured in a minibus attack in the regional capital, also named Zaporizhzhia.

In southern Russia’s Krasnodar region, officials said a Ukrainian drone strike killed two children and wounded two adults.

The latest strikes followed a Russian drone attack on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, central Ukraine, on Friday.

Oleksandr Hanzha, head of Dnipropetrovsk region, said early Saturday that the death toll from the shopping‑center strike had climbed to 16, with nine still missing and another 130 injured.

Kryvyi Rih, Zelenskyy’s hometown, was hit by what he called a double‑tap strike: an initial drone wave followed by a second as rescuers arrived. He said the blaze, which engulfed about 9,000 square meters (roughly 97,000 square feet), has been put out and rescue operations continue.

Kryvyi Rih has endured several strikes throughout the four‑and‑a‑half‑year conflict; one of the deadliest came in April 2025, when 20 people — including nine children — were killed.

Large‑scale Russian strikes have become routine this summer; Friday’s assault followed a nighttime barrage of missiles and drones on Kyiv just 24 hours earlier that left 16 dead.

In recent weeks Kyiv has suffered repeated blows: a strike just over two weeks ago killed 17 people in the capital and its environs, and another attack two days prior claimed nine lives. The United Nations noted last week that Kyiv ranked among the worst‑hit cities in July, with at least 54 civilians killed and 202 injured.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has taken the fight into Russian territory with long‑range drone strikes on oil installations, triggering fuel shortages across the country, and has rattled the Russian public by hitting warehouses owned by Wildberries, the nation’s largest online retailer.

Russian online outlet Astra reported Saturday that a Ukrainian drone ignited an oil refinery in the Samara region. Local officials said the strike also damaged an unidentified industrial facility and a logistics hub for Ozon, a rival to Wildberries.
