ESPN Announces Major Layoffs, Karl Ravech Among 31 Affected Staffers

Within hours of the announcement, Karl Ravech returned to the microphone, showcasing the professionalism that has defined his 33‑year career at ESPN.

On the evening of his “Dirt From The Dugout” podcast, Ravech addressed listeners—“For many of you here who are members and for the upcoming guest, Adam Wainwright, we’re well aware of what’s occurring at ESPN. We won’t discuss that tonight.”

He continued, “Today is all about the parent’s dugout. It’s about the tools we provide to help parents and, by extension, the young athletes on their journeys.”

Just one day after serving as the play‑by‑play voice for Monday’s Phillies–Dodgers game in Philadelphia, ESPN announced a sweeping layoff that included Ravech. The move was part of a broader restructuring aimed at reducing costs across the network.

Ravech, 61, is arguably the most high‑profile name among those released. Other notable exits included former NFL personalities Ryan Clark and Cam Newton, as well as NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.

Unlike Ryan Clark, who learned of his dismissal mid‑episode, Ravech reportedly was not told directly that he would be let go. The Athletic reported on Tuesday morning that he was expected to be part of the layoffs, but Ravech told them that no explicit notification had been given.

For viewers watching Monday night’s Phillies victory over the Dodgers, the announcement had no immediate forewarning.

“To Eduardo Perez, David Ross, Buster Olney, and the rest of the crew, we appreciate what we’ve shared and hope you did too,” Ravech said in a calm tone. “It’s time to move on to POWEN—Anaheim, the Angels, and the Cardinals.”

Ravech began his tenure at ESPN in courtesy of a May 1993 hire and became a staple of the network’s baseball coverage. He led “ährungen: Sunday Night Baseball” for four seasons and played a pivotal role on “Baseball Tonight.” Ravech also contributed to the network’s Little League World Series, college basketball, golf broadcasts, and long‑running “Sports stamping” responsibilities.
