Seven armed groups have announced a coalition aimed at overthrowing the government.
Despite numerous peace agreements and ceasefires over the years, Ethiopia’s armed factions have persisted in fighting each other as well as the state military. Recently, several of these former adversaries have joined forces in an effort to remove the government in Addis Ababa.
The coalition warns that Ethiopia is teetering on the edge of disintegration and holds Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed responsible. While Abiy asserts that the nation can defend itself, many Ethiopians worry the country may be on the brink of another civil war.
Given the deep political and ideological divides among these former rivals, the question remains whether they can realize their shared objective.
