The EUR/JPY exchange rate hovered near 184.95 on Friday, marking a 0.35% decline for the session, as the Japanese yen drew renewed support from government plans to encourage greater domestic investment. Simultaneously, confirming data showing softer inflation in Germany and France exerted downward pressure on the euro.
Revised figures released Friday indicated continued disinflation across the euro area. German Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) rose 2.4% year-on-year in June, down from 2.7% in May, with a 0.2% monthly contraction. French consumer prices slowed to 2.0% annually from 2.8% previously, declining 0.3% month-on-month.
The readings bolster expectations that the European Central Bank will hold rates steady at its July meeting while monitoring energy market developments. The euro’s immediate reaction was muted, however, as markets had largely anticipated the outcome.
In Japan, the yen advanced against most peers after Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama announced measures to prompt households and the Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) to raise allocations to local assets. She also signaled gradual rate increases and proposed expanded government bond offerings for retail investors.
Such steps fueled expectations of capital repatriation and reinforced bets on further Bank of Japan policy normalization. Combined with heightened intervention risk, the comments triggered aggressive short-covering in the yen.
MUFG analyst Derek Halpenny noted the unexpected announcement drove sharp moves across yen, bonds, and equities, but cautioned that tangible effects will require time. He emphasized that lasting portfolio shifts depend on sustained confidence in the BoJ’s trajectory.
